Firing your work with us
- How much does a kiln firing cost?
- €2.50 a litre for loose pieces, €40 for a shelf, €90 for the whole kiln, VAT included. A finished piece takes two firings, biscuit and glaze.
- Which clays and temperatures do you fire?
- Biscuit and glaze firings up to 1280°C (cone 10), for stoneware and earthenware. Tell us your clay and we confirm the temperature before you bring anything in.
- How long does a firing take?
- A firing runs overnight and the kiln needs a day to cool; depending on the kiln schedule, pieces are ready in 4–10 days. You get a collection date when we confirm.
Before you bring your work in
- Bone dry only
- All pieces must be completely bone dry before drop-off — damp work cannot be fired.
- Glaze and kiln shelves
- Keep glaze off the base of each piece and anywhere else that will touch the shelf. Set runny or experimental glazes on a kiln cookie or stilt — bringing your own is the surest way to protect your work. Damage to shelves, stilts or other kiln furniture from glaze that runs, melts or sticks is charged to you at repair or replacement cost.
- Expedited firing
- Need it sooner? Work fired outside the regular schedule or in a part load carries a 30% surcharge. It depends on timing and kiln space, so check with us before you count on it.
- Glazing between firings
- Need to glaze your pieces after the biscuit firing? You can hire the studio space and tools to do it here, for €10 an hour — mention it in your enquiry.
- Collection
- Please collect your pieces within 7 days of hearing they're ready. On request we can keep them longer, for €5 a day. Work left for more than two weeks without an arrangement may be moved or discarded to make room for other firings.
- Firing risk
- We fire every load with care, but firing always carries some risk. We can't be held responsible for cracking, warping or breakage caused by the clay body, construction or moisture, or for damage from incompatible materials or poor preparation.
